Paper Bag Size, GSM & Capacity Guide.

How to calibrate paper density (GSM), Burst Factor (BF), gusset dimensions, and weight ratings for commercial retail and food service without overpaying or experiencing bag ruptures.

1. What is GSM in Kraft Paper Bags?

GSM (Grams per Square Meter) quantifies the weight of one square meter of paper. In the Indian packaging market, retail buyers often assume that higher GSM automatically equals higher strength. However, real-world structural reliability depends on two critical parameters:

  • Fiber Quality: Virgin kraft pulp contains long, unbroken cellulose fibers that interlock tightly, delivering exceptional tensile resistance. Low-grade recycled agro-paper contains short, broken fibers that tear easily even at high grammages.
  • Burst Factor (BF): A standardized measure of pressure resistance. An 80–100 GSM kraft sheet with 20+ BF is significantly tougher and more tear-resistant than a 140 GSM low-BF recycled paper bag.

2. GSM Benchmark & Application Matrix

Use this reference matrix to select the ideal paper density for your specific product weight and handling requirements.

3. How to Measure Paper Bag Dimensions

Industrial paper bag dimensions are always quoted as:

Height (H) × Width (W) × Gusset / Depth (G)
Height (H)

The vertical distance from the bottom crease to the top open rim of the bag.

Width (W)

The horizontal front face of the bag across the bottom base edge.

Gusset (G)

The side expansion fold width. This determines whether flat food containers can sit upright without tipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GSM mean in paper bags?

GSM stands for 'Grams per Square Meter' and measures the areal density of the paper sheet. A higher GSM indicates thicker paper. However, load-bearing strength also depends on fiber quality and Burst Factor (BF). A 100 GSM virgin kraft paper with 20+ BF often outperforms a 130 GSM weak recycled sheet.

What GSM should I choose for my business?

For pharmacies, dry bakeries, and small cosmetic items: 80 GSM (up to 1.5–2 kg load). For cafe takeout containers, food delivery, and general retail: 100 GSM (up to 4–5 kg load). For apparel, shoes, heavy books, and luxury retail: 120–140 GSM with twisted paper handles (up to 7–8 kg load).

How are paper bag dimensions measured?

Paper bag dimensions are standardized as Height × Width × Gusset (in cm or inches). The 'gusset' is the side expansion fold that allows the bag to open into a box-like rectangular base, providing volume and self-standing balance.

What is the Burst Factor (BF) and why does it matter?

Burst Factor (BF) measures paper's resistance to rupturing under hydraulic pressure (Bursting Strength in kg/cm² divided by paper GSM × 1000). Papzo uses high-BF kraft paper (18 to 24 BF) to guarantee that bottom seams and bag walls do not tear even when carrying heavy food boxes or glass containers.

Can I get custom-printed paper bags in specific sizes?

Yes. For orders of 5,000 pieces or more, Papzo provides custom industrial flexographic printing directly from our Lucknow plant. Customers can contact our plant team via WhatsApp at +91 99182 80347 mentioning they came from the Papzo site to request proofs and quotes.
